Yes, but people want it here largely because it's American. That's the way this country has been going for years.

Should have an unofficial rule that any house decorated for Halloween is participating for Trick or Treat. Just so the Kids know where to knock without being disapointed. It is both a fun and dangerous time of the year. We don't take part but we do stock some goodies for that day just in case. This year we got 1 knock :) so we gave them lollies. They were really happy too.

I love Halloween. I had loads of kids knocking on my door. It was beautiful this year. There was a chill in the air, the wind was blowing and everyone had their houses and yards decorated with ghoulish things. I handed out candy apples and popcorn balls. Some people make their whole front yard into a grave yard. Children are very well mannered and love coming to my house. I had a life size black coffin on my porch complete with black roses.

he hit the nail on the head about the shops adopting it to make money. last year when the little kids came to the door my dad gave them chocolates that were 2 years past the used-by date, then when he ran out of those he put the hose on them when they came round

Halloween is actually not traditionally American!! Talking about Obama, The Simpsons, Family Guy, or any other American TV show is.

I had 1 group of trick or treaters & I was not prepared (had no lollies) so they vandalised my car :( I was totally devastated. When I went around door to door asking if anyone knew who the kids belonged to everyone treated me like some grumpy old woman (I'm 29) i.e 'Oh it's just a bit of fun' So IMO, by all means let the kids dress up or have parties, but don't shove it down my throat. I've experienced halloween overseas & it's wonderful, but it's just not common enough to be fun here. Sorry.

no offence mate. we are a multicultural nation and all, thats what we are and taking on other nations traditions is what we do. personally i am NOT a fan of the whole "begging for lollies or we mess your house up" thing.. we have laws against that... BUT the whole dress up gimmick is fun for kiddies and a lot of adults. I believe in the celebration of any tradition within the law...any that I know of XD

I have no problems with people in Australia having Halloween parties if they wish. I would object to my peace in my home being invaded. In USA the expectation is that you will have lots of treats made up to give to the kids when they door knock otherwise they play a trick on you. I along with most Australians am not going waste time making up heaps of lolly treats to hand out.

Its a bit hard to hve Halloween in New Zealand too. Halloween in America conicnides usually with late autumn and stark trees and cold temperatures. Here its late spring, about 20 degrees and it dosen't get dark until 8.30. You can not celebrate a 'dark' holiday at such a light time of the year
